The Dominican Republic, with its 10.8 million consumers and average annual GDP growth of 5% over the past 30 years, deserves our attention. This Caribbean country, much more than a beach paradise, rum and merengue, was Latin America’s 7th-largest economy in 2023.
In 2022, exports of goods from Brussels to the Dominican Republic skyrocketed by 860.8%, going from EUR 311,801 in 2021 to EUR 3 million. Imports also jumped by 74.9%, reaching EUR 620,294. The DR is now one of our top 10 cocoa suppliers and ranks 75th among our customers, up from 129th in 2021.
For over a year, the Dominican Republic Ambassador to Belgium has been calling for a greater presence of Belgian companies to strengthen trade relations in sectors such as waste recycling, green energy, the circular economy, sustainable construction, electrical safety, health, telecommunications, infrastructure and logistics.
Synergies between our economies are possible, and our companies can provide real added value. The Spanish, French and Germans have understood this and are already snapping up contracts. To learn about the opportunities and key sectors in which our companies can excel, come along to the hub.brussels offices on 25 September.
