Sweden is often considered to be an innovative and green country. The country has a highly liberalised, open-market economy. This strong economy that Sweden has today is in part because the country did not participate in the Second World War, thus the economic base and the banking systems remained stable.
The economy and society are characterized by a strong partnership between the public and the private sector, which is what is often referred to as The Swedish Model. Today, the country has strong beliefs in equality, openness, and diversity, which creates an environment where people dare to be innovative and try new projects.
About 80% of the GDP is contributed from the private sector, and 20% from the public sector. Exports are essential for Sweden and contribute to about one-third of the country’s GDP.
The Swedish market is very accessible. Due to an easy access to education most Swedes are fluent in English. Moreover, due to 90’s governmental policies Sweden is highly digitalised, rendering virtual communication into a simple task.
In terms of distance, Sweden is still largely within the 1500 km radius of Brussels which is acceptable in terms of supply chains. Lastly, due to above average salaries Swedes are more likely to find themselves with more disposable income and are therefore known as early adapters, particularly in matters concerning technology and environment, and Swedish companies are known to use profits to reinvest in innovation.
