The Federal Reserve Bank of the United States has considered the growth of the American economy to be modest and moderate since the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Growth restarted in 2011 in the United States, ending the crisis. From 2014-2015 on, the rate of economic growth increased moderately, reaching 2.9% in 2018.
The COVID-19 pandemic put an end to these years of growth. American GDP fell by 5% in the first quarter and by 32.9% in the second quarter of 2020.
Foreign investment in the United States increased by USD 158.6 billion between 2018 and 2019. At the end of 2018, investments reached USD 5,801 billion and increased to USD 5,959 billion at the end of 2019. The main increase came from Europe, particularly Ireland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Belgium is the eighth biggest European investor in the United States.
Although its infrastructure is functioning but ageing, the United States continues to be an excellent destination for direct foreign investment. As a result, the country has long been the first choice of many multi-nationals.
